Wilson-Holmes red hit one.

Scott rolled his eyes at Giles interfering.

Seriously, Giles? Red hit one? Yeah, right.

A smiley face appeared next as Dolly continued to talk about her aunt.

Scott knew Giles wasn’t really suggesting they call on the best sniper in their team to take down Mr Wilson-Holmes, but it still made him grin a little.

A knock at the door took his attention away from them both. He plopped his brush in a jar of water as he stood, then headed off to the small square hallway of the cottage.

Dolly was on the other side. She lowered her phone from her ear and just stared doe-eyed at him.

He reached out and took her hand and gently pulled her into his arms for the hug he could see she needed. The freshly washed smell of her hair filled his nostrils as his head lowered to rest upon hers. Her hold on him tightened a touch, and then her fingertips started to slowly stroke his blue tee-shirt.

You need to stop doing that, Dolly. I want you so much, but I can’t do this with you until after you know the truth, and I have to do it the way I planned. It will be the only way you’ll forgive me for knowing all this time and not telling you. It will make it easier. Oh, please, stop. I’ve held off for this long. All the time we’ve spent together lately has been wonderful. It’s just a couple more days. Come on, Scott, you can do this. Pull away. Make her a cup of tea or something. Just talk. Two more days. You’ve got this.

‘Hey, Doll,’ he whispered into her hair. ‘Come and sit in the kitchen. I’ll make you a cuppa.’

Her arms slid down to her sides, leaving him feeling lonely and deflated. The feeling was torture. All he wanted was to continue holding her. Kiss her. Take her up to his bedroom and stay until they had to leave for food, or water, to pay the bills, or make an appearance at Dexter’s graduation.

The Mermaid Festival seemed to be taking forever to come around. He had never been so keen to attend. Writing wedding vows would have been a lot easier than the words he had gone over a hundred times in his head for the moment they planned to meet outside the spotted beach hut.

He glanced over at her sitting in a slump in one of his unpainted kitchen chairs. Even the kettle was delaying its standard boiling time. Time suddenly felt slow, endless, and frustrating.

Scott had patience. It came with his job. Not just his military job, but his artist job too. He had never been one to rush through life. He was laidback, calm, and happy to watch the clouds drift by. But new traits were developing since meeting Dolly, and he wasn’t quite sure how to handle them.

At least his boss, Anna, was due back tomorrow. Then he’d have less time in the shop and more time to himself during the day.
